Pisa is a city in Tuscany, in central Italy, built on the sides of Arno river and known worldwide for its Leaning Tower. With a population of ~90000 inhabitants, Pisa is framed by medieval city walls and has many sigths to visit: Square of Miracles with the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistry and the Mounmental Cemetery, Knight's Square with Palazzo della Carovana and the church Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, both designed by Giorgio Vasari, and many other chaurces, buildings and museums.

The University of Pisa is an italian public research university. Founded in 1343, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Among the many students of the University of Pisa are Galileo Galilei, universally thought as the founder of modern science, Nobel Laureates Giosuè Carducci, Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubbia, Fields Medal recipients Enrico Bombieri and Alessio Figalli. The University of Pisa has been the first italian university to set up a degree course in Computer Science (1969) and the place where was built the Pisan Electronic Calculator (CEP), designed and sponsored by Enrico Fermi. Currently the University of Pisa counts ~50000 students.

 

Travel

 

Pisa is served by Galileo Galilei International Airport, the local airport which is located in the southern periphery of the town, a few kilometers from the city center. 20 different airlines provide flights from/to several domestic and international destinations.
A second option is Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence, that is ~80km far from Pisa and can be reached by train in 1.5 hours.
Pisa also has a Train Station that allows travellers to reach all the major italian cities.
It is also possible to travel by car, using A11 or A12 highways.
